The talks are not over, because intellectual property rights have to be protected for US concerns, in more rigorous negotiations forthcoming. Have the tariffs worked? I do not agree with them, but many will say they have been essential.

So, what is the net economic outcome so far? It seems US tariff payers have subsidized farmers for almost a third of income received. Thus, 1/2 consumer tariffs paid = 1/3 farm income.

Software used in the US is written all over the world. And to the (large) extent that cellphone services are driven by software, they are also subject to worldwide competition.

Most of the clothing, toys, household furnishings, tools, and electronic goods available in the US today are manufactured and imported from overseas, which has contributed significantly to falling prices for those imports…..

Competition is a wonderful thing for an economy but surely there’s a better example than this. The chart above provides a stark example of the influence of government involvement on pricing. Student loan guarantees versus tuition increases are a perfect example. I doubt that references to the “chart of the century” refer to anything beyond the dramatic illustration of skyrocketing costs for health-care and education.

If only more people would see this chart.

Suggestion:
The above “Chart of the Century” tracks the price change–increase and decrease–in inflation adjusted dollar cost.
Very enlightening.

Your readers would also be interested in combining the relative (percent) change in commodities and services ALONG WITH the increase in wages over this time period.
This analysis would provide the changes in the REAL cost to American consumers in time required to purchase those goods and services.

This analysis would give provide a view of the change in HOURS of WORK needed to purchase those goods and services.

After all where is the foreign competition resulting in lowered cost for cellular service and computer software? I think it may be more likely that the two factors governmental involvement and lack of LOCAL competition have driven the red lines upward. It seems the economic establishment is dead-set on condemning tariff policy as a bargaining chip despite the fact that the upward slope of the lines has been essentially constant since long before tariffs were imposed.

“This avoids the interesting question: _why_ do women not want to code?”

You would have to ask them, but I suspect the answer is similar to the one you would give if asked why you don’t want to teach 2nd grade or work in a nail salon. “It’s just not something I would find rewarding”.

“… the women working in software are clearly competent and capable”

Yes, of course but there may not be as many of them in the general population as there are competent and capable men who are interested in coding. News flash: Men and women are different and often have different interests and abilities, no matter how often or how loudly some people say “it ain’t so”. Don’t let it trouble you any longer. “It is the way it is”.

1. A recent research paper found that women place a higher preference than men on getting high grades and an overall high GPA, and they therefore leave programs in Computer Science and Engineering at a greater rate than men. Classes in tech and engineering are more difficult with lower average grades than classes in education and humanities. So women prefer higher grades and a higher GPA in easier classes than lower grades and a lower GPA in tech classes. More men than women are willing to accept lower grades and endure harder, more demanding classes to finish and get a degree in tech.

2. High school boys significantly out-perform girls on the Math SAT test, both overall and especially for perfect and near-perfect scores. That gender math disparity favoring males has existed since the 1970s, at least for the Math SAT test. If math ability as measured by the math SAT is a good predictor of success in a highly mathematical program like engineering, that could be another reason that men outnumber women in engineering/tech programs and jobs.

That’s at least one possible reason for female underrepresentation in tech, with a very troubling solution from the authors of the paper: Grade inflation in STEM/tech classes to attract/keep more women.

We might not want or be able to do anything about it but as a software engineer, I’m very interested in the answer.

TBH, I think it’s unsatisfying to conclude “that’s the way it is, it’s never going to change.” We’ve used that logic way too many times in the past and I’m quite suspicious of it. Human knowledge advances by observing “gee, that’s odd” and asking “why?”

It’s odd that women don’t choose coding: it’s not dangerous or physically demanding, the women working in software are clearly competent and capable, and software companies typically have very flexible work environments (something women often say they value). I don’t get it.
