FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (May 10, 2021) — Michael R. Strain, the director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), announced today that Mark Warshawsky, who most recently served as deputy commissioner for retirement and disability policy at the Social Security Administration, has joined AEI as a resident scholar. Dr. Warshawsky will continue his work on Social Security, pensions, long-term care, and disability insurance.

Said Dr. Strain, “As a scholar and policymaker, Mark brings a depth of knowledge and practical experience to some of the most important policy challenges facing the nation. On issues ranging from long-term care insurance to disability insurance, Social Security, and pension plans, Mark has done foundational research while serving in key roles at the Social Security Administration, the federal Commission on Long-Term Care, and the private sector. I am thrilled that Mark is joining AEI’s community of scholars. His talents, experience, and wisdom will deepen our understanding of these critical policy issues and help strengthen the nation through better policy.”

Dr. Warshawsky has served as a member of the Social Security Advisory Board, vice chairman of the federal Commission on Long-Term Care, and assistant secretary for economic policy at the US Department of the Treasury, where he had a key role in the development of the Pension Protection Act of 2006. In addition, he held senior positions at the Federal Reserve Board, the IRS, and the TIAA-CREF Institute.

He has also been a senior research fellow at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center; a visiting scholar at the MIT Golub Center for Finance and Policy; president of ReLIAS LLC, a firm specializing in customized retirement income strategies; and the inventor of the life care annuity, a product integrating the immediate life annuity and long-term care insurance benefits.

Dr. Warshawsky has testified often before Congress and has been published widely in academic journals and the popular press. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of eight books on retirement and pensions.

Added Dr. Warshawsky, “I am delighted to join AEI as a resident scholar. AEI is a premier think tank with outstanding scholars who do excellent independent and unbiased research on policy-relevant topics. I am pleased to be able to continue to pursue analysis on key areas where I have made contributions in the past. In this current era of public-sector overreach and excess, federal and state rules need modernization and moderation, so that citizens can freely follow their aspirations and private enterprises can thrive.”
