FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (September 20, 2019) — American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Robert Doar announced today that Glenn Hubbard, a former chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and dean emeritus of Columbia Business School, has been appointed the John H. Makin Visiting Scholar for the 2019–20 academic year.

“I am delighted that Glenn Hubbard is the John H. Makin Visiting Scholar,” said Robert Doar. “Glenn’s academic work, complimented by practical experience and public service at the highest levels, will benefit AEI tremendously.”

Added Michael R. Strain, director of economic policy studies at AEI: “Glenn is one of the world’s leading economists. His work on tax policy, public finance, macroeconomics, and a host of other topics has been central to how economists understand policy issues. I’m thrilled that he is a member of AEI’s community of scholars.”

Concurrently the Russel L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics at Columbia Business School, Glenn Hubbard is the coauthor of several critically acclaimed books, including “Balance: The Economics of Great Powers from Ancient Rome to Modern America (Simon & Schuster, 2013); “The Aid Trap: Hard Truths About Ending Poverty” (Columbia University Press, 2009); and “Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise: Five Steps to a Better Health Care System” (AEI Press and Hoover Institution Press, 2005, second edition, 2011).

“I look forward to the coming year. My time at AEI has produced innovative studies and books, and I am particularly happy to be the John H. Makin Visiting Scholar and honor my late friend and colleague with new research in the economic areas he cared about.”

Created thanks to a generous gift from Gwendolyn van Paasschen, Dr. Makin’s wife of 31 years, the John H. Makin Visiting Scholar chair was established to recognize Dr. Makin’s numerous contributions to economic research and policy at AEI, as well as his work as a university professor, a chief economist on Wall Street, and a consultant to the US Treasury Department, the Congressional Budget Office, and the International Monetary Fund. During his more than 30-years at AEI, Dr. Makin wrote numerous books and articles on financial and monetary policy, including the widely read monthly “Economic Outlook,” which paired insightful research with a discussion of current economic topics.
