Washington, DC (May 31, 2019): American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Arthur Brooks and incoming President Robert Doar announced today that Yuval Levin, founding editor of National Affairs and Hertog Fellow at the Ethics & Public Policy Center, is joining AEI on June 3, 2019. Dr. Levin will serve as a resident scholar and will direct a new social, cultural, and constitutional studies research division at AEI.

Scholars in the new division will study the foundations of self-government and the future of law, regulation, and constitutionalism. They will also explore the state of American social, political, and civic life, focusing on the preconditions necessary for family, community, and country to flourish.

Dr. Levin will also bring with him National Affairs, a quarterly journal of essays about domestic policy, political economy, society, culture, and political thought, which he founded in 2009. The journal will be housed at AEI as of July 1, 2019. Yuval Levin will continue to be the editor in chief of National Affairs and will bring with him three editorial staff members who help produce the magazine. National Affairs will be editorially independent from AEI.

Said AEI President Arthur Brooks, “Yuval is one of America’s most gifted public intellectuals, who combines philosophical depth with practical policy implications. I am thrilled he is joining us at AEI.”

Added incoming President Robert Doar, “Yuval Levin’s work and breadth of experience brings a new dimension to AEI’s work on the ideas that underpin our democracy, and I am delighted that National Affairs will also be housed with us.”

Dr. Levin will continue to be a contributing editor of National Review and a senior editor of The New Atlantis. From 2004 through 2006, he served on the White House domestic policy staff under President George W. Bush. He also worked as executive director of the President’s Council on Bioethics and as a congressional staffer.

Dr. Levin is the author of “The Fractured Republic: Renewing America’s Social Contract in the Age of Individualism” (Basic Books, 2016) and several prior books on political philosophy and public policy. His next book, “A Time to Build,” will be released later this year. He has been widely published in the popular press, including in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, among many other outlets. Dr. Levin received a B.A. in political science from American University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

“AEI has long been home to many of my heroes and models — men and women working to improve our country by applying its highest ideals to address its toughest problems. I’m enormously grateful for the opportunity to join their efforts in pursuit of an American renewal,” said Yuval Levin.
