FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Washington, DC (April 5, 2019)— American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Arthur Brooks and incoming president Robert Doar announced today that departing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., will return to AEI as a resident fellow in health policy studies. Dr. Gottlieb first joined AEI in 2002, and much of his work over the years has focused on the improvement of public health through entrepreneurship and medical innovation and on the expansion of regulatory approaches to maintain patient and physician autonomy.

Michael Strain, AEI’s Director of Economic Policy Studies and John G. Searle Scholar, said, “We are honored and delighted that Scott Gottlieb is returning to AEI. All Americans have benefited from his important work at the FDA. Today, because of Scott, cancer patients, new mothers, and the many Americans taking pharmaceutical drugs are safer and healthier.”

During his 23 months at the FDA, Dr. Gottlieb focused on a wide variety of issues including drug pricing, food safety, vaccination, and tobacco and vaping. He also streamlined the regulatory process for the approval of new groundbreaking pharmaceutical drugs, including the first gene-therapy-based cancer treatment and a record number of novel drug and medical device approvals. Dr. Gottlieb helped advance the FDA’s Oncology Center for Excellence, which fosters a collaborative scientific environment to improve the development and regulation of oncology products. In addition, he helped implement the 21st Century Cures Act to accelerate medical product development.

Dr. Gottlieb previously served in other capacities at the FDA, including as deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs, senior adviser for medical technology, and director of medical policy development. Earlier, he served as senior policy adviser to the administrator at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Until he joined the FDA as commissioner, he was also a clinical assistant professor at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Gottlieb was a practicing physician and hospitalist during his tenure at AEI.

In addition to his frequent testimonies before Congress, Dr. Gottlieb is often published and interviewed by the media. His interviews range from CBS News to Fox News, and his commentary and articles have appeared in Health Affairs, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post among other outlets.
