Washington, DC (February 13, 2018) — American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Arthur C. Brooks announced today the creation of the Asness Chair in Applied Liberty. Made possible by a generous gift of $2.4 million from the Asness Family Foundation that will provide funding for 15 years, this chair will support an AEI scholar whose work is dedicated to reconciling individual freedom with cultural values that make freedom and progress possible. AEI Fellow Jonah Goldberg will be the first scholar to hold the chair.

“My colleagues and I are enormously grateful to the Asness family for their intellectual, moral, and financial support. Jonah’s wit, intellect, and fearless independence are more needed than ever. This gift ensures that Jonah’s voice will stay in the middle of the public conversation,” said Brooks.

“Of course, I am grateful and humbled beyond words for this incredibly generous gift from the Asness family,” said Goldberg. “It is a great honor to have the support of the Asness family in our shared mission to defend and advance the cause of liberty.”

“We are delighted to support AEI’s mission in making the moral and practical case for free enterprise and a free society and are thrilled that Jonah will further advance this cause as the Asness Chair in Applied Liberty. To us this is a perfect coupling of the right issue and the right scholar. And, please note, the broadness of ‘Applied Liberty’ is intentional. One only has to read a small fraction of Jonah’s work to see that pigeonholing him any further wouldn’t work! Plus, it doesn’t hurt that besides being brilliant and right, Jonah’s also hilarious,” said Clifford Asness.

Goldberg’s research covers an array of topics within US politics, culture, and intellectual history. He is the author of two New York Times bestselling books, “The Tyranny of Clichés” (Sentinel HC, 2012) and “Liberal Fascism” (Doubleday, 2008). His forthcoming book, “The Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics Is Destroying American Democracy,” will be released in April 2018.

In addition to his AEI work, Goldberg is a nationally syndicated columnist, and his writings appear regularly in more than 100 newspapers across the United States. He also has a weekly column in the Los Angeles Times and is a member of the board of contributors to USA Today, a Fox News Channel contributor, and a regular member of the Fox News All-Star Panel on “Special Report with Bret Baier.” He is also the founding editor of National Review Online.

Goldberg is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards and accolades, including the Robert J. Novak Journalist of the Year Award at the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2011 and the Lowell Thomas Award in 2001 for electronic journalism. He was a finalist in 2007 for the Bastiat Prize for Journalism and Online Journalism for promoting and defending the principles of a free society. In 2009, The Atlantic named Goldberg one of the top 50 political commentators in America.

Asness is a member of AEI’s Board of Trustees and is the managing and founding principal of AQR Capital Management LLC.
